Unease Among PDP Leaders Over Wike Camp’s Silence After Meeting In Enugu

There is currently uncertainty in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) camp following the non-disclosure of the meeting held by Governor Nyesom Wike and his political allies in Enugu State on Sunday.

Five governors on the opposition party’s platform, including Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, and Wike, had reportedly met behind closed doors to discuss the recent turmoil within the party.

As may be recalled, the governors and some of their allies have been at odds with the party’s leadership ever since Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, was selected as the party’s vice presidential candidate for the elections scheduled for 2023.

Iyorchia Ayu’s resignation as the party’s national chairman is being demanded by Wike and his group in order to balance the party’s leadership positions, which they claim have been heavily skewed toward the North.

According to a party chieftain who spoke with Daily Trust, the party’s leadership is awaiting the results of the work being done by the Board of Trustees (BoT) Reconciliation Committee, which is led by acting chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara.

Several governors, including Okowa and Atiku, had meetings with the BoT; assuming no last-minute changes, Wike is also scheduled to meet with the BoT today.

According to the source, “everything now depends on the reconciliation efforts of the BoT, after the meeting between Atiku and Wike on Thursday.

“Many people were thinking that the governors will make their position known after the Sunday meeting in Enugu, but as it stands no one is sure.”

According to a different source at the party headquarters, the BoT and Atiku are the only parties who can currently resolve the situation.

Senator Walid Jibrin, who served as the BoT’s immediate past chairman, has meanwhile urged the party’s organs and all of its members to work together for unity, progress, and peace.

Jibrin, who resigned to allow for the reconciliation, stated in a statement that everyone’s priority should be the party’s success, according to a report in Daily Independent.

“I have been working with all organs of the party. I will continue contributing based on my enormous experience throughout this PDP and will continue until Atiku becomes the president of Nigeria in 2023.

“I hereby urge all PDP members and all Nigerians to come out and vote for Atiku,” he said.
