President Bola Tinubu has unveiled plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies into Nigeria’s security architecture as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s fight against terrorism, banditry and other evolving security threats.

The President made the pledge on Monday through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Tinubu said his administration remains committed to transforming the Nigerian Army into a technologically advanced force capable of responding effectively to contemporary security challenges.

“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness,” the President said.

He disclosed that the Federal Government is prioritising research, innovation and indigenous defence manufacturing, with the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) playing a central role in the strategy.

According to Tinubu, ongoing reforms are aimed at enhancing the Army’s operational capabilities while reducing reliance on foreign military hardware through increased local production.

‎”This administration is committed to modernising our Army to enhance its capacity to meet contemporary security challenges,” he said, expressing confidence that strategic partnerships would expand domestic production of advanced combat equipment and improve military effectiveness.

The President also underscored the growing importance of artificial intelligence in modern warfare and national security, noting that collaboration through the African Land Forces Forum would strengthen intelligence sharing, border security, counter-terrorism operations and cybersecurity resilience across the continent.

He added that the forum would also provide an opportunity for African militaries to harness the benefits of AI in addressing emerging security threats.

‎Commending officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their service, Tinubu urged them to uphold professionalism and protect the rights of citizens while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

“Serve the people with the same devotion you bring to defending them, for the uniform commands respect only when it protects the weak and upholds the dignity of every citizen,” he said.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equipping the Armed Forces with modern technology, enhanced training and improved local defence production as part of broader efforts to restore peace and strengthen national security.
