Customs Officer Dies in Lone Crash on Ikom-Calabar Highway

A 54-year-old officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Prince Etteng Ise, has died in a lone motor accident along the Ikom-Calabar Highway in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State.

‎Ise, who was attached to the Mfum Border in Etung Local Government Area, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole.

‎The accident occurred at about 2:56 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, near Alesi Village in Ikom LGA, according to the Cross River State Police Command.

‎The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday.

‎According to Eitokpah, preliminary investigations indicated that Ise was driving along the highway when he attempted to manoeuvre around a pothole, lost control of the vehicle and veered into the bush before crashing into a tree.

‎“The victim, identified as Prince Etteng Ise, 54, a Customs Officer serving at Mfum Border, Etung LGA, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole. The vehicle veered into the bush and collided with a tree,” the statement said.

‎The victim was rushed by residents to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, where a medical doctor pronounced him dead. ‎His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary.

The police command expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues and the Nigeria Customs Service.

It also urged motorists using the Ikom-Calabar Highway to exercise caution, avoid excessive speed and remain vigilant, particularly when navigating sections of the road affected by potholes.
