Awka Under Tension as Popular Disc Jockey Is Killed in Gun Attack

Tension has gripped residents of Awka, the Anambra State capital, following the killing of popular mobile advertiser, disc jockey and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Aiza, and another unidentified man by suspected cultists.

The two victims were reportedly shot dead at separate locations in Awka on Sunday, August 30, 2026, throwing residents into panic.

Nwosu’s bullet-riddled body was discovered inside his Toyota Hilux vehicle, while the other victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, was found along a street in the city.

Sources said Nwosu was allegedly trailed from his residence by suspected assailants travelling in a tinted vehicle before he was attacked.

The popular entertainer was said to have survived previous attempts on his life. He was also previously involved in a controversial accident while performing a public address function with his vehicle, an incident that reportedly left him seriously injured.

Nwosu was well known in Awka for his work as a DJ, master of ceremonies and mobile advertiser. He also occasionally presented programmes on local radio stations and was a familiar face at high-profile social events.

Confirming the killings on Monday, the Anambra State Police Command condemned the attacks and said it had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said preliminary investigations indicated that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla were responsible for the attacks.

According to him, the vehicle’s registration number had yet to be established.

“Upon receiving the distress call, police operatives immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and commenced efforts to track down the assailants,” Ikenga said.

He disclosed that the bodies were recovered from Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively, before they were taken to a hospital where medical personnel confirmed them dead.

While one victim remained unidentified, the second was confirmed as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Aiza.

Police operatives also recovered ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes.

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, had described the killings as unacceptable and a direct threat to the peace and security of Anambra State.

The commissioner subsequently ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.

The police also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring communities in a bid to apprehend the suspects and prevent further attacks.

Ikenga appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and anyone with credible information about the attackers, their movements or the vehicle used in the operation to contact the police.

He assured residents that all information supplied would be treated with strict confidentiality, stressing that public cooperation was crucial to the successful apprehension of the perpetrators.
