JUST IN: Military Overthrows Benin Republic’s President Patrice Talon from Power
President Patrice Talon, has been removed from office as military officers toppled the government in Benin Republic on Sunday.
BIGPEN NIGERIA (https://bigpenngr.com) reports soldiers took control of the federal government, at the wee hours of the day after the stormed a national television to announced the president removal.
The soldiers also announced the appointment of the President of Military committee for Re foundation, Lieutenant Pascal Tigri.
The statement reads: “The military committee for the Refoundation of Benin convened on Sunday, December 7, 2025 in Cotonou to determine the nation’ path forward. President Patrice Talon is hereby dismissed. Lieutenant Colonal Pascal Tigri is appointed President of Military committee for Refoundation effective immediately.”
The group, which labels itself the Military Committee for Refoundation, said the president, all political officeholders, and all state institutions have been effectively removed.
The Benin Republic president, Patrice Talon, has been in office since 2016 and has promised to leave office in April 2026 after the presidential poll.
In September 2024, the commander of the republican guard and head of Talon’s security, Djimon Tevoedjre, was arrested following an attempted coup.
Benin Republic is now the latest West African country to fall under the control of a military junta.
