BREAKING: Court Sacks Mark-Led ADC Leadership, Nullifies Atiku’s 2027 Presidential Ticket

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday nullified the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark.
Delivering judgment, Justice Peter Lifu declared the Mark-led Caretaker Committee illegal and invalidated all decisions taken under it — including the primary election that produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The court also nullified the emergence of former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, as National Secretary, alongside other national officers who emerged under the disputed leadership.
It further invalidated the nominations of all candidates presented by the party for the 2027 elections.
The judgment followed a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025, filed by former ADC National Deputy Chairman (North-East), Nafiu Bala Gombe.
Gombe argued that following the resignation of former National Chairman, Chief Ralph Nwosu, he was constitutionally entitled to assume leadership of the party.
He asked the court to invalidate all actions taken by the Mark-led leadership and to restrain Mark, Aregbesola and other members of the caretaker committee from parading themselves as valid leaders of the party.
The plaintiff maintained that their emergence violated the ADC constitution and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act.
In the suit, the ADC, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mark, Aregbesola and Nwosu were listed as 1st to 5th defendants respectively.
Justice Lifu upheld Gombe’s claims and granted the reliefs sought. The court also directed INEC not to recognise or act on decisions taken at the party’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting held on July 27, 2025.
Reacting to the judgment, the ADC National Welfare Secretary, Nkemakolam Ukandu, who was joined in the suit as an interested party, said the party would appeal the ruling.
The judgment came barely 24 hours after Atiku, whose name had earlier been published by INEC as the party’s presidential candidate, held a campaign rally in Sokoto State. Atiku had picked former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate.
