The Kwara Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps  (FRSC), Mr Jonathan Owoade,  has warned motorists in the country to stop the habit of making and receiving calls while driving.

Owoade gave the warning in Ilorin on Wednesday during a road show to motor parks in commemoration of the 2021 World Day of Remembrance for Victims of Road Traffic Crashes.

The commander, while addressing commercial drivers and motorists at Sawmill Motor Park in Ilorin warned them to stop using mobile phones while driving.

According to him, receiving and making calls while driving is against driving ethics and very dangerous.

He cautioned them to learn to obey traffic rules, avoid speeding and travelling at late night.

”Motorists are fond of receiving and making calls while driving. It is suicidal to do that, this is one of the major distractions while driving.

“Drivers must remain focused and stop using phones. Speeding is one of the major causes of road crashes as motorists want to arrive ahead of time.

“It is not safe to travel at night. Travel during the day time. The country we are in does not guarantee night journey. Motorists must be aware of this and play safe,” he said.

He also warned them to be safety conscious by being patient on the road and as well install speed limit on their vehicles.

He noted that the road show was to remember those that had lost their lives on the road and as well to sensitise the public on road safety.

“We are in a sober reflection at the moment. It is not that we are celebrating those that have lost their lives, but we are making awareness to the public to be safety conscious,”   he added.

“We will pass the message to others who are not around. We are very disciplined here and we always sensitise our members about the rules on the road,” he said.

Officers of the FRSC, Kwara command and National Youth Service Corps also participated in the road show.

The programme 2021 World Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Road Traffic Crashes with the theme: ”Remember Support Act”,  is scheduled to hold Nov. 15 to 21.
