Police Arrest, Arraign 8 #EndSARS Protesters, Detained 6 Others In Delta
The police in Delta State have arraigned and remanded eight out of fourteen EndSARS protesters arrested on Thursday in Ughelli, Delta state after the violence protest that led to the killing of a police corporal.
BIGPEN reports that the suspects were raided from various spots on Thursday following the directive of the Inspector General of Police to the State Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, to smoke out those behind the killing of Corporal Etaga Stanley during a #EndSARS protest in Ughelli.
Multiple reports say the police in a commando-style had combed Ughelli town and adjoining communities to fish out those behind the death of a police officer.
BIGPEN had reported that an orgy of violence broke out on Thursday at Otovwodo, Ughelli, headquarters of Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, when EndSARS protesters and police team clashed.
The violence broke out following the hijack of the protest march by suspected hoodlums who took available of the situation to cause mayhem in the state.
It was learnt that during the protest, three civilians were also shot – one already died, the other allegedly shot on his manhood, while the third one was shot on his kneel.
“The (Ughelli) incident resulted in the unfortunate death of one Police officer, Corporal Etaga Stanley attached to ‘A’ Division, Ughelli, Delta State who was attacked and brutally murdered by the protesters. It also left another, Sergeant Patrick Okuone with serious body injury sustained from gunshot by the protesters.
“The protesters also carted away one (1) service AK47 rifle with breach no 56-2609008 and 25 rounds of live ammunition that was with the deceased at the time of the incident”, Force Public Relation Officer, Frank Mba, said.
It was gathered that following the IGP directive to fish out the perpetrators, police raided Ughelli and arrested about 14 persons including impounding five exotic cars belonging to the protesters.
A police source who earlier confirmed this development disclosed; “The vehicles impounded are a red Camry spider with registration number ABJ 822 CK, a red Mercedes Benz with registration number UGH 509 KZ and a Lexus Jeep RX 330 with registration number WWR 762 TD.
A white Camry spider with registration number UGH 286 KZ, a green Lexus Jeep RX 330 with registration number WWR 341 KL were also impounded.
Meanwhile, confirming the arrest to newsmen on Friday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said that eight of the suspects have been charged to court and subsequently remanded.
“We have arrested 14 suspects and they have been charged to court. Eight of them were remanded”, she said.
The other police officer said to have been injured during the protest is recuperating, she said.
