Chevron companies in Nigeria have reaffirmed their long-term commitment to partnership and investment in Nigeria as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

In an independence message, the oil major said it remains confident in Nigeria’s future and committed to responsible energy development, more than six decades after beginning operations in the country.

Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Companies in Nigeria, Jim Swartz, said the company takes a long-term view of Nigeria, with focus on operational excellence, efficiency and investment across its portfolio.

“Chevron remains committed to building enduring relationships that enable human progress today and in the future,” Swartz said.

According to the company, it is expanding and optimising its assets through exploration, infill drilling and production enhancement, while supporting the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 and Federal Government’s efforts to improve the industry’s regulatory framework.

Since the PIA, Chevron said it has renewed and converted key joint-venture and deepwater leases, recorded discoveries at Meji NW-1, Delta South AA and Awodi-07, entered PPLs 2000 and 2001 through farm-in agreements, acquired deepwater block PPL 2010, and renewed Oil Prospecting Licence 215.

The company is also participating in strategic deepwater projects, including the planned Bonga Southwest/Aparo and Owowo/Usan developments, while completion of seismic acquisition across several deepwater leases is supporting future exploration.

Chevron said planned infill drilling at the Agbami and non-operated Usan hubs is intended to mitigate production decline and sustain output.

On gas development, the company said investments in the Escravos Gas Plant and Escravos Gas-to-Liquids facility have supported gas utilisation, reduced flaring and enabled production of naphtha and diesel.

Chevron also led development of the 700km West African Gas Pipeline supplying gas to Benin, Togo and Ghana.

The company said local content remains central to its operations, with Nigerians accounting for over 90 per cent of its workforce.

It noted it established its Local Content Policy in 1999, before the enactment of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act in 2010, and continues to work with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).

Beyond operations, Chevron listed its social investments to include over 28 chest clinics, nine mother-and-child healthcare centres and a medical diagnostics laboratory built by the Agbami parties, as well as education support benefiting over 23,000 people through scholarships.

It said the Agbami Medical and Engineering Professional Scholarship has supported over 16,500 students since 2009, including 715 first-class graduates, while 39 science laboratories and 25 libraries have been delivered.

The company also recalled its support for the 78-hectare Lekki Conservation Centre, established and donated to the Nigerian Conservation Foundation in 1992.

“As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, Chevron sees Nigeria as a long-term strategic partner and remains committed to investing in energy development, Nigerian capability and sustainable national progress,” the statement signed by Olusoga Oduselu, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Chevron Nigeria and Mid-Africa Region, said.
