Adeda’s Death: Otovwodo Shuts Down East-West Road, Gives Delta Govt 7-Day Ultimatum

Hundreds of protesters on Wednesday barricaded the East-West Road at Otovwodo in Ughelli North, Delta State, demanding justice over the death of their son, Deputy Director Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda.

The protesters, who shut down Otovwodo community and caused heavy gridlock on the ever-busy East-West Road, gave the Delta State Government a seven-day ultimatum to arrest the Commissioner for Secondary Education and others allegedly linked to Adeda’s death.

They rejected the panel of inquiry constituted by the state government, saying it did not include any member of the family or community.

Adeda, a deputy director in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Asaba, hailed from Otovwodo. He died on September 25, 2026, after an incident at the ministry, now under police investigation.

Displaying placards with inscriptions such as ‘Justice for Adeda’, ‘We are peaceful people; all we want is justice’, and ‘A killer cannot be a Commissioner’, the protesters demanded that the state government produce those responsible.

President-General of Otovwodo community, Prince Elvis Oharisi, called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to relieve the Commissioner and Director of their duties and make them face the law.

“Adeda was subjected to violence involving the Commissioner for Secondary Education, the Director, a police officer and others. The trio should be blamed for the death,” Oharisi alleged.

“This is not just about Otovwodo. Unity is from here, and that is why it is painful to us, but it affects the entire kingdom. The community is in grief. We are calling for justice.”

He added: “We are giving the government seven days to bring our son back to us. You cannot treat a human being the way he was treated.”Oharisi said the community would not accept release of suspects without due process.

“The community was not represented in that committee. The family was never represented. So, we have no iota of trust in that committee. If the government fails to meet the demands, we will shut down the whole place,” he declared.

Youth leader, Mr Umudi Ohwofasa, said: “The death of our brother, father, husband and breadwinner is devastating. We want the government to bring out those responsible.”

Mrs Julie Adeda said: “My brother-in-law was a very peaceful and lovely man who was the breadwinner. We want the government to arrest those involved and allow the law to prevail.

”Other protesters, Tobi Onajite and Mama Regina, said their relative was “killed like a fowl.”
