Delta Official Kills Trailer Conductor Over Levy Collections

An official of the department of produce, Ministry of Agriculture Delta State has reportedly killed a truck conductor over levy collections on heavy duty vehicles along Asaba/Benin express road.

BIGPEN Online understands the incident happened during an altercation between the official and the truck conductor.

Sources said that the officials of the ministry had mounted roadblock on the highway with intent to inspect and collect levies from heavy duty vehicles conveying products to the state.

It was gathered that after flagging down the Mack trailer with Reg. T0093YB, blue in colour,  an argument broke out between the officials, the driver and conductor.

In the ensuing commotion and confrontation, the official, an ‘inspector’ in the ministry reportedly hit the conductor of the trailer with a baton and he immediately slumped and was rushed to a nearby healthcare center where he was later pronounced dead.

Sensing danger, the said official fled the scene and have since gone under, our source added.

Confirming the incident on Friday in a statement, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, Police Public Relations Officer, said a manhunt has been launched for the fleecing ‘inspector’ over the manslaughter case.

She said the Commissioner of Police, CP Adeyinka Adeleke has commiserated with the deceased family and reiterated that the Inspector General of Police ban on illegal road blocks on the Highways for the collection of levies is still in force.

The statement reads: “Today being 5/7/2019, men suspected to be from the department of produce, Ministry of Agriculture Delta State, while on inspection duty along the Asaba/Benin express road stopped a Mack trailer with Reg. T0093YB, blue in colour.

“During an altercation, one of the inspectors hit the conductor of the trailer on the head, who subsequently slumped.

“The conductor was immediately rushed to Onicha-Olona General Hospital where he was confirmed dead by the Medical Doctor.

“Effort is being made to arrest the fleeing suspect.

“The Inspector General of Police ban on illegal road blocks on the Highways for the collection of levies is still inforce

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Adeyinka Adeleke is using this medium to warn the general public to always conduct their affairs with civility at all times while commiserating with the family of the deceased”.
