***Directs Management To Revert To 2016/2017 Approved Acceptance Fee

The Delta State Government on Monday debunked widespread claims that it authorized fee increment at the Delta State University, Abraka saying that it never approved increment of fees at the institution.

The state government in a statement issued by Commissioner of Higher Education, Engr Jude Sinebe, urged the general public to disregard the speculated increment of Acceptance Fees at the institution.

BigPen Online recalls that the imposition of new acceptance fee on students of the institution had sparked widespread criticism and condemnation against the state government and management of the institution.

Some students of the Institution, worried over the outrageous fee had raised the alarm, calling on well meaning individuals to prevail on the institution’s authority and Delta State Government to come to their aid and rescind the decision.

However, reacting to the development, State Commissioner for Education, Sinebe said students welfare is paramount to Governor Okowa’s led administration and will never compromise quality education.

“The Delta State University Abraka and all state owned tertiary institutions management are advised to maintain the approved fees inclusive of Acceptance fees for 2016/17 for use in 2017/18 academic session..” he said.

Meanwhile, contrary to the assertion of the Commissioner for Education, the Students Union Government, SUG of the Institution said a meeting held between the management and students body resolved that the fee should be reduce to a bearable minimum.

President of the Students Union Government, SUG, Comrade Christian Mamus Igbuku in a statement on Monday after the meeting, said that the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof Victor Peretomode after a crucial meeting held with SUG has agreed to reduce the acceptance fees hike and has made it uniform to both professional and non professional course alike.

According to him, the institution have decided that indigene will be paying 30,000 while non indigene will be paying 40,000 respectively.

“We therefore want to thank the management for their understanding to listen to voice of reasoning and that of parents and students. We want to thank every groups and individuals who stood behind us at these trying moments.

“I want to also reassure you that normal school fees remain the same and it will continue to remain so by God’s grace but if you notice any form of increments, don’t hesitate to report to the SUG.

“Those who have paid their acceptance fees already, certainly your money is not lost, just find out from the students affairs and the bursary offices and see the procedures on how to apply, do it and you will have your money back”.
