A yet-to-be-identified graduate of Lagos State University (LASU) is battling for his life after he was struck by a stray bullet when suspected armed robbers allegedly trailed a Point of Sale (POS) operator to her residence in the Igando area of Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Sunday along Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area of Igando, where the four-man gang reportedly stormed the neighbourhood on two motorcycles in search of the POS operator.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspects first visited the woman’s nearby shop before proceeding to her residence after discovering she was not at the business premises. They allegedly attempted to force their way into the bungalow while repeatedly calling out the operator’s name, but were prevented from entering after the occupants locked the entrance.

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Bode, said the robbers became enraged after failing to gain access and opened fire indiscriminately.

“The robbers came on two motorcycles and were about four in number. They had traced the POS operator to her house. When they discovered she was not at her shop, they went to the house and started calling her name while trying to gain entry. The occupants quickly locked the entrance, preventing them from entering. Out of frustration, they started shooting indiscriminately,” he said.

Another resident, who requested anonymity for security reasons, disclosed that the LASU graduate was walking along the street when he was hit by one of the bullets.

“He unknowingly walked into the scene before he realised what was happening. It was at that moment the robbers began shooting after failing to locate their target. After they fled, residents rushed to rescue him and took him to a nearby General Hospital. We learnt he had just graduated from LASU and was preparing for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC),” the resident said.

Punch reports that, a police source confirmed that officers were immediately deployed to the scene following a distress report.

“Our attention was drawn to the incident, and our men responded promptly. We also recovered spent bullet shells in front of the house as part of the investigation,” the source said.

When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said she had yet to receive details of the incident but promised to verify the report.

“The report has not gotten to me. I’ll check and revert,” she said.

As of the time of filing this report, no further update had been provided by the police, while efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects were ongoing.
