…Urges Nigerians to Embrace Service Over Celebration

‎Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has marked his 65th birthday with a call for greater national reflection, selfless service, and renewed commitment to addressing Nigeria’s social and economic challenges.

‎In a personal message released on Sunday to commemorate the milestone, Obi said birthdays should be occasions for thanksgiving, introspection, and a recommitment to improving the lives of others rather than extravagant celebrations.

‎Reflecting on Nigeria’s realities, Obi noted that despite the country’s abundant human and natural resources, millions of citizens continue to grapple with poverty, unemployment, poor healthcare, and limited opportunities.

‎According to him, while elaborate celebrations may be appropriate in societies where institutions function effectively and citizens enjoy security and prosperity, Nigeria’s current circumstances demand a more sober approach.

“The greatest celebration of life is not what we receive from others, but the lives we can touch positively,” Obi said.

He explained that the philosophy of prioritising service over personal comfort has shaped his career in business, the corporate sector, and public office, particularly during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

Obi disclosed that over the years, he has consistently encouraged individuals and organisations wishing to celebrate him to channel resources towards projects with lasting social impact instead of expensive gifts or ceremonies. He said the approach has contributed to the construction of schools, hostel blocks, educational support programmes, and other facilities benefiting underserved communities.

‎To commemorate his 65th birthday, Obi said he began the day with a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha, expressing gratitude to God for His grace, protection, and guidance throughout his life.

‎Following the church service, he visited St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, where he donated ₦10 million to support the hospital’s healthcare services.

‎During the visit, Obi said interacting with patients reinforced the importance of compassionate leadership and the need to ensure quality healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of financial status.

‎He described hospitals and schools as two of the most critical investments any society can make, noting that while hospitals preserve lives, schools shape the future.

Obi urged Nigerians, particularly leaders and privileged individuals, to embrace a culture of service, stressing that true fulfilment lies not in public recognition or material gifts but in making meaningful contributions to the lives of others and the nation’s development.
