‘They Were Warned’: Delta Govt Says Asaba Death Could Have Been Avoided If NDC Had Not Ignored Police Advice

The Delta State Government says the political violence that killed one person in Asaba on Saturday could have been avoided if organisers of the NDC march had listened to police warning.
The government said police had intelligence that violence was likely, invited the organisers to a security meeting, and warned them not to do an open-road procession on Nnebisi Road.
Instead, police advised them to hold their campaign at a designated venue where adequate security could be provided.
According to the government, the organisers ignored that advice and proceeded with the street march. The confrontation that followed left one person dead and several others injured.
In a statement by Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, the government described the incident as unacceptable and reiterated zero tolerance for political violence, intimidation and political rascality.
Aniagwu said the government had repeatedly cautioned political parties against activities capable of disrupting peace.
He said the state would no longer tolerate politically motivated attacks against any individual, irrespective of party affiliation. He called on police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure everyone found responsible is brought to justice.
Omo-Agege Disagrees
Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, disputes the government’s account.Omo-Agege alleges that armed thugs, allegedly sponsored by elements in the state government and APC, attacked unarmed NDC campaigners. He claims more than 30 vehicles were vandalised and over 10 supporters injured.
He has called on President Bola Tinubu to call Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to order. The government has not responded to that specific allegation.
BIGPEN NGR reports there is still confusion over casualty figures. While the Delta Government says 1 dead, 4 seriously injured, the Police (CP Samuel Erale) recorded 1 dead, 5 injured, in the incident at 12:15pm on Nnebisi Road but Omo-Agege camp claimed 1 dead, over 10 injured, 30+ vehicles destroyed.
The police say a full-scale investigation has commenced.
The state government, however, urged political parties, leaders and supporters to conduct their activities within the law and respect human life, public order, and the rights of other citizens.
It stressed that Delta remains safe for residents and visitors, and would not allow individuals or groups to undermine the peaceful atmosphere in the state.
