Nigeria Moving Backward Under Tinubu, Says Oritsejafor

Former President of the Christian
Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has urged President Bola Tinubu not to seek re-election in 2027, arguing that his administration has failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians and has deepened the country’s challenges.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday night, Oritsejafor said the Tinubu administration had not provided the leadership required to effectively address Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic and security problems.
According to the cleric, the country appears to be moving backward rather than making progress, with many citizens facing worsening economic hardship and diminishing hope for a better future.
He maintained that the government had done more harm than good and should not be granted another term in office.
While stopping short of calling for Tinubu’s resignation, Oritsejafor said the President should undertake an honest assessment of his performance and refrain from seeking a second term if he is unable to deliver meaningful improvements for Nigerians.
The former CAN president also expressed support for recent remarks by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who suggested that Tinubu should consider stepping aside to allow more competent leadership to emerge.
Commenting on recent electoral victories recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC), Oritsejafor questioned the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, describing many elections as predetermined outcomes rather than genuine democratic contests.
He argued that the country’s electoral system often fails to reflect the will of the people, adding that many Nigerians have lost confidence in the process and no longer believe their votes count.
Oritsejafor further stated that if given the opportunity to meet President Tinubu personally, he would tell him that his administration’s performance had been unsatisfactory and advise him either to step aside, forgo a re-election bid, or support individuals capable of transforming the country.
He added that the church would continue to speak out on national issues and hold public office holders accountable in the interest of the Nigerian people.
