Sir Keir Starmer, the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party, has announced his resignation, signaling the end of a challenging leadership tenure marked by mounting internal disagreements and political challenges.
Addressing the nation outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer stated that his decisions throughout his time in office were driven by a desire to prioritize the interests of the country.
In an emotional farewell, he expressed gratitude to his wife, Victoria, calling her his “Rock”, and shared his hopes of dedicating more time to his family and being the best father he can be.
The outgoing Prime Minister stated he would serve in a caretaker capacity until the Labour Party selects a new leader.
He also requested that the party complete its leadership transition before Parliament reconvenes in September.
Starmer’s resignation comes amid weeks of intensified pressure from within the Labour ranks, following a series of political setbacks and increasing calls for leadership change. His departure comes less than two years after leading Labour to a historic victory in the 2024 general elections, according to News Express.
All eyes are now on potential successors, with political figures like Andy Burnham seen as frontrunners. Burnham’s recent victory in the Makerfield by-election has further fueled speculation about his chances of stepping into the leadership role after Starmer.
