Urhoboland Loses a Legend, Nigeria Loses a Maestro – Omo-Agege on the Passing of Johnson Adjan

Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has expressed sadness over the death of Prof. Johnson Oyibode Adjan, a legendary musician and custodian of Urhobo culture.
Reacting to the passing of the maestro, Omo-Agege who is the Obarisi of Urhoboland noted: “Adjan was more than a musician. He was a maestro, a great philosopher, and a true custodian of Urhobo culture whose life’s work preserved and projected the heritage of our people to the world. Through his timeless music, he gave voice to our stories, wisdom to our generations, and pride to our identity.
In a statement by Sunny Areh, Media Adviser to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, said, “Until his death, he remained a towering figure respected across board — by traditional institutions, scholars, fellow artists, and the countless fans who found meaning in his art. His influence transcended age and geography, and his legacy continues to command great admiration till date.
He said Adjan’s songs taught values, history, and wisdom across generations, earning him the honorific title of “Professor.”
Senator Omo-Agege said Professor Adjan integrated deep Urhobo philosophy and worldviews into his lyrics, cementing his status as a revered cultural ambassador.
“We have lost an iroko, but his melodies, teachings, and cultural stewardship will remain eternal. He was not just a singer. He was a philosopher in rhythm, a custodian of Urhobo culture, and a legend whose voice carried the soul of our people,” Senator Omo-Agege said.
An indigene of Ofuoma-Ughelli, Professor Adjan’s inspiring lyrics and delivery captured the hearts and admiration of listeners as the people saw him as a song-warrior. His dominance of Urhobo folklore and music scene spanned decades.
“The vacuum he leaves in the Urhobo nation and Nigeria’s cultural landscape cannot be filled.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, the music community, and all who mourn this irreplaceable icon.
“May his soul find peaceful rest, and may his legacy continue to inspire,” Omo-Agege prayed.
