Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has charged newly inaugurated members of the Governing Council of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, diligence and a deep sense of commitment.

He noted that effective governance remains key to strengthening the institution’s standing as a leading centre of academic excellence in Nigeria and beyond.

The governor gave the charge during the inauguration of Rt. Hon. Festus Agas, Rt. Hon. Frank Enekorogha and Mr. Charles Ajuyah, SAN, as members of the University’s Governing Council.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori described the inauguration as significant despite his tight schedule, noting that the Governing Council plays a central role in the effective governance of any university through policy direction and oversight.

He said the appointment of the new members came at an auspicious time as DELSU continues to strengthen its position as a leading centre of higher learning in Nigeria and beyond.

“The Governing Council remains central to the effective governance of any university, providing policy direction and ensuring that institutional goals are achieved,” the governor said, adding that his administration had consistently appointed men and women of proven integrity, experience and distinction into the governing councils of tertiary institutions in the state.

According to him, the three appointees have distinguished themselves in public service and leadership, making them eminently qualified for the responsibility entrusted to them.

He said: “As members of the Governing Council, you carry the aspirations of thousands of students, staff, alumni and the entire people of Delta State. Your decisions will shape policies, influence academic direction and define the future of this great university for generations to come”.

He urged them to serve with transparency and commitment, stressing that their decisions would have lasting impact on lives and the future of the institution.

The governor expressed confidence that their wealth of experience would help DELSU continue to produce graduates who are academically sound, morally upright and socially responsible.

Responding on behalf of the inaugurated members, Rt. Hon. Festus Agas expressed gratitude to God and the Delta State Government for the opportunity to serve, describing the appointment as a great honour and a call to service.

He assured the governor that the council members would work harmoniously with the Vice-Chancellor and university management to add value to the administration of the institution and advance its mission.

Agas also commended Governor Oborevwori’s leadership, particularly the cordial relationship among the arms of government in the state, which he said had translated into remarkable achievements within two and a half years.

He praised the administration’s achievements in peace and security, infrastructure development, human capital development and healthcare, citing progress on major road projects, youth empowerment programmes and the strengthening of the contributory health insurance scheme.

“We thank the Governor for the confidence reposed in us. We will serve with dedication, loyalty and integrity,” Agas said, while praying for continued wisdom and strength for the governor to take Delta State to greater heights.
