US Consulate General In Lagos, Partners To Celebrate Outstanding Political Journalism At 2023 Awards Ceremony

The US Consulate General Lagos, in collaboration with the West Africa Broadcast & Media Academy (WABMA), Enugu Literary Society (ELS), and other executing partners, is set to host the 2023 Political Reporting Project (PRP) Awards Ceremony.

BIGPEN NIGERIA (https://bigpenngr.com) reports that the event aims to honour and promote excellence in political journalism as the occasion would gather notable political reporters, journalists, and significant media industry figures for a day of acknowledgment, networking, and contemplation on journalism’s crucial role in society.

The event would be held at the American Corner, Ikeja, Lagos state.

The PRP is a non-governmental initiative that has been instrumental in facilitating a series of Political Journalism Workshops and Photojournalism and Videography sessions covering the 2023 election cycle in Nigeria.

In a statement e-signed by Temitope Omole, Assistant Registrar, WABMA Lagos, and Ken Ike Okere, Project Team Lead,said that the one-year project, which commenced in September 2022, has built a community of skilled political reporters, editors, photojournalists, and videographers.

According to the statement, the programme, has also contributed to the capacity-building of 150 journalists and certified fact-checkers, while promoting and curating content produced by exceptional participating journalists.

The 2023 Political Reporting Awards ceremony would pay tribute to exceptional reporters, photojournalists, and videographers.

The statement said that the awards would honour excellence in several categories including: Print (including online print media), Broadcast (including online broadcast media), and Photo & Video Journalism, adding that the some PRP participating media firms would also receive Honorable Mention.

Besides, the statement said that those recognized at the PRP are exceptional reporters, editors, photojournalists, and cameramen who produce outstanding content, upholding the journalistic ethics of objectivity, balance, fairness, and presentation of facts and data.

Ken Ike, the Team Lead of PRP and former Director of FRCN’s National Broadcast Academy, said that “political journalism plays a vital role in maintaining democratic principles by informing the public and holding those in power accountable”.

He emphasized that this event is a chance to recognize and celebrate the relentless efforts of political reporters, editors, photo, and video journalists who strive to provide accurate, insightful, and impartial reporting”.

The ceremony would include guest speakers from the US Consulate General Lagos, Literary Society (EKLS), and Enugu Literary Society (ELS), along with an awards presentation segment where winners will be announced, it reads.

“This event offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into the state of political journalism and hear from individuals shaping the narrative in our ever-evolving political landscape”, the statement added.
