We Are Facing Massive Soot From Warri Refinery, Uvwie PDP Chieftain Raises Alarm

Former Secretary of the South-South Leaders and Elders Forum, Chief Abovi Hope Erute has said the people of Uvwie are suffering from massive soot from the Warri Refinery and Petroleum Chemical Company (WRPC), yet remains the most marginalised in terms of oil largess to host communities by Delta oil commission.

According to the PDP chieftain, who called on the Delta State Government to work and quantify the hazards the people of Uvwie Local Government was facing, said it is a serious concern that the government was doing nothing about addressing the hazards faced by people of the area.

Chief Erute spoke in his Effurun residence during a chat with newsmen on Thursday, complaining that the allocation from the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), is not equitably shared amongst the oil bearing communities particularly Uvwie contrary to the aim of the interventionist agency to utilize the 13% of what comes out of production.

He warned that the Government might be unwittingly preparing to have problems in the near future if they fail to quantify the hazards in Uvwie.

“Uvwie is benefitting the least in the sharing of the 13% from the allocation of DESOPADEC and we suffer all the hazards.

“We get almost nothing from DESOPADEC because they say we have no oil wells whereas, all the oil wells that are drained in all the other communities are piped down to Uvwie Local Government, to Ekpan to the refinery to be specific for refining.

“According to Aladja people, they say you cannot take “Akamu”, the pap more than the man who ate corn because pap is only one part of the corn. The man who eats corn, ate both the shafts and everything. So, we suffer everything we do in oil production.”

Erute wondered the role the Uvwie politicians are playing in correcting the abnormality stressing that they are more interested in their pockets.

He however said that he doesn’t subscribe to the situation where politicians jump from one party to another saying that though no political party in Nigeria has a clear ideology, he would remain in the PDP to rebuild the party so as to recapture power at the national level.

“I am a PDP man but I disagree with PDP. But it’s not enough for me to go to another party simply because I know that the other parties are no different from the PDP. We are talking about Nigerians. No party in Nigeria has an ideology.”

“So, moving from one place to the other is actually for pecuniary interests rather than philosophical or ideological dispositions.”

“So, I remain in PDP. I want to correct what we are doing wrong in PDP. Lets not go anywhere. Perhaps, if PDP is corrected, it will help to correct most of the other parties.
