‎Why Court Rejected El-Rufai’s Medical Bail Request

…As doctors recommend hospital admission

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has tested positive for a drug-resistant bacteria while in custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), with doctors recommending hospital admission.

According to two medical reports dated October 22, 2026, blood cultures conducted by Cerba Lancet Nigeria showed both aerobic and anaerobic cultures positive for _Enterococcus faecium_ after 24-48 hours incubation.

The laboratory report identified the organism as Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE), listing vancomycin as resistant, while ampicillin/amoxicillin, erythromycin, levofloxacin, minocycline and linezolid were marked as sensitive.

The lab document was, however, marked as “INTERIM REPORT” with a note that “Final Verified Report to Follow.”

A separate report by ASK+ Medical & Diagnostics on the same date documented El-Rufai’s symptoms, listing dyslipidemia, persistent headaches, insomnia, mild generalized headache, dizziness and history of hypotension.

The report noted the 66-year-old former governor appeared mildly dehydrated, with clinical impression of dehydration with resistant malaria and possible sepsis, with suspected para-umbilical focus.

His vitals were recorded as blood pressure 93/70 mmHg, pulse 68 beats per minute, temperature 36.2°C and oxygen saturation 98% on room air.

ASK+ confirmed the blood culture finding, stating “Blood Culture: Enterococcus faecium (Gram-positive) isolated,” adding that other investigations including full blood count, malaria test, renal and liver function tests, fasting lipid profile, random blood glucose, urinalysis and HbA1c were within normal limits.

Despite normal results for other tests, the report recommended admission for observation, intravenous fluids and treatment guided by lab findings.

“Review the blood culture result and sensitivity results and, in consultation with Infectious disease physician, consider appropriate IV antibiotic therapy and admission for at least three days as advised by the clinical pathologist,” the report stated, listing possible IV antibiotics including Augmentin, Gentalex, L-Flox and linezolid.

El-Rufai remains in ICPC custody facing prosecution. The medical documents do not establish any connection between his detention and the bacterial finding.
