The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has confirmed an explosion on a gas pipeline in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, with reports of injuries and damage to residential buildings and businesses.

The incident occurred on Thursday on a pipeline operated by the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited, a subsidiary of NNPC Limited.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company said it had activated its emergency response procedures and isolated the affected section of the pipeline to prevent further damage.

The statement was signed by NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, who said the company was working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to manage the situation.

NNPC expressed concern over reports of injuries and property damage, assuring affected residents that protecting lives and preventing further harm remained its immediate priorities.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses. Our thoughts are with those affected and their families,” the statement said.

It also disclosed that relevant operational records, including previous reports and actions taken, would be reviewed to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion and determine the necessary corrective measures.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to the safe and reliable operation of its facilities, environmental protection and the safety of communities hosting its assets.

Meanwhile, NNPC urged residents and members of the public to stay away from the affected area and comply with safety instructions issued by emergency responders and relevant authorities.
