2027: Omo-Agege Defends ‘Rig And Die’ Comment, Says It’s For Riggers Not Voters

Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has defended his controversial ‘Rig and Die’ declaration ahead of the 2027 elections, saying it is not a threat to voters but a warning to election riggers.

In a press statement by his Special Adviser on Strategy and Communications, Godwin Anaughe, Omo-Agege said the phrase has been misconstrued by the Delta State Government, Commissioner for Works and Public Information Charles Aniagwu and the camp of Senator Ede Dafinone.

“RIG AND DIE is not a threat to voters. Voters don’t rig elections. It is a threat to riggers who falsify election figures and results,” the statement said.

According to him, the declaration is a patriotic warning to ballot thieves, a rejection of electoral robbery and a call to defend democracy in line with Section 1(2) of the 1999 Constitution.

“To rig an election is treason. It is a coup against the people. RIG AND DIE simply entails every rigging machinery will be defeated and crushed by popular resistance,” he said.

Omo-Agege argued that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Dafinone cannot win free and fair election, alleging they plan to write results.

He cited precedents, saying in April 2014, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu warned it would be “rig and roast” in Ekiti and Osun, and in February 2019 President Muhammadu Buhari ordered ballot snatchers should be shot at sight.

“If Tinubu’s ‘rig and roast’ was patriotic and Buhari’s shoot-at-sight order was official policy, how does Omo-Agege’s ‘rig and die’ suddenly become anarchy?” he queried.

The statement also revisited the Delta Central bye-election of October 12, 2013, where Dafinone as DPP candidate alleged there was no voting, saying Dafinone then knew rigging was evil.

On the mace incident, Anaughe said Omo-Agege did not steal the mace but went to resume his seat after securing a Federal High Court judgment nullifying his suspension, adding that courts later exonerated him.

He maintained Omo-Agege won the 2023 Delta governorship election but was rigged out in Delta North, particularly in Ika North, Ika South, Oshimili North and Oshimili South, and went to court as a law-abiding leader.

“In 2027, there will be no court this time. We will defend our votes at the polling units and collation centers. That is lawful. That is constitutional,” the statement added.
