Ruth Kadiri Warns Couples Against Pressure of Lavish Weddings

Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri has advised couples to avoid the pressure of organising elaborate weddings, warning that the expectations surrounding such ceremonies could negatively affect their marriages.

Kadiri said extravagant weddings often place emotional and mental pressure on couples, noting that the demands of wedding preparations could influence their transition into married life.

The actress made the remarks in a video circulating online and shared by Pulse on Sunday, where she questioned why some couples who had enjoyed happy relationships for years begin to experience fear and uncertainty after their wedding ceremonies.

“I do think that big weddings put pressure on couples. It puts pressure on the marriage itself,” she said.

Kadiri urged intending couples to prioritise their relationships and emotional well-being rather than trying to meet societal expectations about how weddings should be organised.

She recommended simpler wedding arrangements, suggesting that couples could complete the necessary traditional and legal processes, invite a few guests and celebrate with close family members and friends.

According to her, couples should not feel obligated to organise multiple ceremonies, including engagement parties, court weddings, white weddings and traditional weddings, merely to satisfy societal expectations.

She also warned that elaborate celebrations could expose couples to unnecessary scrutiny and pressure from others, stressing that the grandeur of a wedding does not determine the success of a marriage.

Beyond weddings, Kadiri called for a change in societal attitudes towards success, particularly the pressure parents and extended family members place on young people to achieve financial stability and meet family expectations.

She highlighted the burden often placed on firstborn children, who are frequently expected to shoulder family responsibilities and provide financial support for relatives.

The actress argued that success means different things to different people and should not be measured solely by wealth, career accomplishments or the ability to satisfy others.

“Success means different things to different people,” she said, explaining that a fulfilling life could simply mean being at home with one’s children and expressing love for them.

Kadiri urged parents, relatives and society at large to give young people greater freedom to make personal decisions without facing constant pressure or judgment.

She added that societal expectations in 2026 could make it difficult for people to enjoy life, urging Nigerians to prioritise peace of mind and personal happiness over public approval.
