The Police Public Relations Officer of Delta State police command, SP Bright Edafe, has refuted a viral video circulating online where a Nigerian woman claimed her husband, a Ghanaian-German national was assaulted by policemen at a checkpoint along the Agbor-Benin Express road.

Edafe, in a statement on Thursday, dismissed the alleged claim of assault, saying that as seen in the video, the police were calm and professional despite the woman’s provocative comments.

He said that the wife of the Ghanian-German man only captured the policemen of the command doing close to nothing other than watching as she made her video to instigate members of the public and, social media community against the policemen.

Edafe said that the claim that the policemen assaulted her husband is false and a deliberate attempt to paint the image of the police force in a bad light.

The statement further reads; “The command is aware of a viral video clip recorded and posted on various social media handles. The Video recorded and posted by a Nigerian woman who claimed she was with her husband, a Ghanaian/German National, captures policemen of the Command doing close to nothing other than watching the woman as she made her video, instigating members of the public and, social media community against the Policemen. For avoidance of doubt and for members of the public not to be misguided into thinking that Policemen of the command are not civil in their operations, the command wishes to state as follows;

“On the 8th of May 2025, Policemen of the command, while on stop and search duty along the Agbor-Benin Express road, intercepted a commercial sienna vehicle carrying about seven occupants. The occupants and their luggage were subjected to a search, but this did not go down well with the Nigerian woman who recorded the video, and she started insulting and harassing the Policemen.

“As seen in the Video, the Police were calm and professional despite all her provocative comments. Her claim that the policemen assaulted her husband is false and a deliberate attempt to paint the image of the police force in a bad light. As heard in the video, she was calling out on the Facebook community and the social media community, which implies that she was aiming at creating content.

“The Command under the leadership of CP Olufemi Abaniwonda does not tolerate indiscipline or incivility to members of the public, and the records are there for all to see. It’s also pertinent to state that during stop and search duty by Policemen of the Command, the command has recovered firearms, ammunition and other exhibits concealed in unimaginable places, hence the command is advising road users plying Delta State roads to be mindful of this fact and cooperate with the police when it is required.

“For any altercation with the Police in Delta state, members of the public are advised to reach the command through the Delta state complaints response unit dedicated phone numbers”.
