The officers who were allegedly seen on a viral video assaulting an unarmed woman have allegedly been detained and arrested, according to the Delta State Police Command.

According to a statement from the police public relations officer, DSP Bright Edafe, the officers were detained at the state commissioner of police’s request, CP Ari Muhammed Ali.

According to Edafe, the CP has ordered that immediate internal disciplinary action be taken in response to the heinous act, which has drawn condemnation from the state’s civil society community.

In a video that went viral over the weekend and was seen by BIGPEN (www.bigpenngr.com), an unarmed woman was seen being handled roughly by police who tied her up with rope in an apparent attempt to bring her to their station.

The men from Agbarho Police Division were identified as the officers in the viral video, though their names have not been released.

While confirming this, Edafe stated that the Command is aware of the viral social media video showing some police officers dehumanizingly mistreating a woman.

He said that after carefully watching the video, it is crystal clear and undeniable that the policemen behaved in a way that was improper for police officers.

Edafe maintained that the Command completely denounced their actions because neither the Police nor anyone else has the right to treat a citizen in such a way.

“Their act is not only inexcusable but unpardonable and will not be tolerated by the Command,” he said.

He noted that the erring police officers serving at Agbarho Division have been identified, summoned, and detained at the command headquarters.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed Ali FCIA, psc+ has directed that internal disciplinary action be initiated immediately, and at the end of their orderly room trial, members of the public will be intimated on the outcome.

“The Command wishes to reiterate that “rope” is not a police accoutrement and as such, should not be used by policemen in whatever guise while carrying out their duty. It’s not in the character of the Command to dehumanize and trample on the rights of citizens.

“He assures members of the public that the officers concerned will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations to serve as a deterrent to others. He CP wishes to emphasize that protection of life and property in the state remains the top priority of the Command”, the statement reads.
