The management of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, (PAP), has dismissed reports making the rounds on major news platforms about the discontinuation of PAP sponsored formal education scholarship awards.

It however confirmed that the program has only suspended the award of fresh scholarships to potential beneficiaries.

BIGPEN NIGERIA (www.bigpenngr.com) reports that multiple media reports had quoted the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Maj Gen Barry Ndiomu (rtd) as disclosing that the scholarship programme  for ex-militants was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Reports say Ndiomu, while speaking on Thursday in Abuja, said the scheme was suspended because it was unsustainable, adding that just one per cent of the trained ex-Niger Delta agitators were gainfully employed.

The Interim Administrator was quoted to have said that the government had no choice but to halt the scholarship programme, adding that the seven billion naira initiative could not be sustained.

But in a statement on Saturday, the management of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, (PAP) said that the PAP sponsored formal education scholarship awards have not discontinued for ongoing beneficiaries but only suspended the award of fresh scholarships to potential beneficiaries.

The statement signed by the Technical Assistant to the Interim Administrator, Flt Lt Terry Ajobena (rtd), clearly stated that all delegates on formal education, both onshore and offshore remain bonafide beneficiaries and will continue to enjoy approved privileges attached to thier various scholarship schemes.

The statement affirmed that the current suspension is as a result of PAP’s financial situation  due  to  debts incurred by previous  formal education scholarship awards and other commitments. The  statement added that the suspension will be lifted as soon as these obligations are cleared.

Beneficiaries are thereby implored to be undistracted as PAP is still committed to its earlier  obligations.
