Neuropsychiatrist Urges Students To Shun Illicit Drug Use, Cultism

Dandy Igwe, a neuropsychiatrist, on Saturday, advised students to shun drug abuse, cultism, and other forms of vice capable of jeopardising their future.

 

 

 

Igwe, gave the advice in Abakaliki while speaking as a Special Guest of Honour at a security and skills acquisition workshop organised by the Students Union Government (SUG) of the Ebonyi State University (EBSU).

The medical practitioner, who works at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AEFUTHA), Abakaliki, expressed displeasure at the rate of substance abuse among youths.

He said the workshop was timely as it would go a long way towards reorienting the youths.

 

He said the security challenges such as insurgency; kidnapping, cultism, banditry, and mindless killings, among other similar situations currently bedevilling the country, could be linked with the use of illicit drugs.

 

He called on students to be agents of positive change and to take advantage of the security and skills acquisition summit to explore new frontiers.

“Youths must extricate yourselves from the web of poverty, insecurity, and all forms of anti-social behaviour to become better citizens and young people with promising future.

 

“You must shun all forms substance abuse because indulgence in drug abuse can only destroy your future, endanger our collective security, and lead to death.

 

“As students, you can use your spare times to engage in skills acquisition to better your economic situation as well as occupy your minds positively,” Igwe said.

“I am overwhelmed by this recognition. It will serve as source of encouragement and motivation to service to God and humanity,” Igwe said after he received an Award of Excellence in humanitarian services, philanthropy, and quality discharge of services from the SUG.

 

He, however, dedicated the award to Chief Edward Nkwegu, Ebonyi Coordinator of the Federal Government Special Works Programme for his untiring efforts at empowering youths of the state through skills acquisition.

Mr Gideon Onwe, Special Assistant to Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi on Students Affairs who presented the award to the awardee commended the students for organising the workshop.

 

 

 

Earlier, the SUG President, Mr Benjamin Agbom, had said that the security and skills acquisition workshop was aimed at complementing the efforts of the state government in ensuring peaceful and secured state.  ensuring peaceful and secured state.
