Aggrieved Warri Ijaw people on Tuesday, stormed the Delta State Government House, Asaba, the state capital in protest.

BIGPENNGR.COM reports that the Ijaws of Warri are protesting the recent Ward creation by the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) ahead the local government elections in the state.
The Ijaws of Warri are alleging that DSIEC deliberate excluded them from the creation of new Wards in the State.

The angry protesters who blocked the Government House gate, are demanding for the creation of Ijaw political ward in Warri south Local government council.

According to the protesters, Warri belongs to the Ijaws, Itsekiris and Urhobos, alleging that Ijaws of Warri were excluded unjustly from the exercise.

They threatened to resist what they called their continuous “political enslavement” in Warri South LGA, saying “we will resist and reject this by all means necessary”.

The visibly angry protesters, however called on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to urgently addressed the abnormally before it snowballed into a major crisis.

The angry Warri Ijaws insisted that the protest would continue until justice is done to the people of Warri Ijaws in Warri South Local government council by creating a ward for them.

BIGPEN reports that the DSIEC had announced the creation of 34 additional wards across 10 Local Government Areas in the state, during a briefing in Asaba at the backdrop of the forthcoming councils election.

The distribution of the new wards as obtained from the commission’s website are as follows: “Aniocha North (six), Aniocha South (six), Bomadi (one), Ika North East (one), Ika South (two), Oshimili North (six), Oshimili South (six), Patani (one), Ukwuani (four) and Warri South (one),” rounding up the numbers of wards in each of the LGAs to 20.

But the exercise, is currently causing confusion and tension in some part of the state with mass protest by hundreds of women and youths and people of Ogbe-Ijoh Warri Urban community in Warri South council area.

In an earlier protest in Warri, the protesters had demanded the immediate reversal of the new ward (Warri South) to be solely for the Ijaws, claiming that until the creation of the LGA, Ogbe-Ijoh had two wards.

An opinion leader from the community, Friday Deinghan who spoke on behalf of the protesters, called on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to address the situation before it escalates and truncates the existing peace in the state.

He stated that neighbouring Itsekiri and Urhobo people who have 10 and nine wards respectively, in the LGA should show “a sense of friendship and fairness”, that this people (Ogbe-Ijoh urban area) really need this (ward)”.

Some of the placards bore by the protesters have various inscriptions like; “Stop marginalization of Warri Ijaws”, “Warri belongs to Ijaws, Itsekiris and Urhobo”, “We want our ward”, “Governor Okowa, Governor Okowa, stop marginalizing the Ijaws in Warri South” “Governor Okowa, we demand justice and fairness in Warri South”, “the Ijaws in Warri will not tolerate any intimidation, we need our ward “ among others.
