A Rare Breed of Priest, Preacher, Teacher and Witness of Christ

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?… But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:55,57

The Catholic Diocese of Warri and indeed the entire Catholic Church, the Charismatic Renewal movement, the wider Christian community and all lovers of the Word of God have lost a mighty general in the Lord’s army.
Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Anthony Mario Ozele was not just a regular priest. He was a rare breed an unassuming, humble and deeply spiritual Catholic priest; a great intellectual; a theologian; an extraordinary preacher; a teacher; a healer; a leader; a compassionate shepherd; and a man whose life and ministry were profoundly centred on Jesus in the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

He was a priest who preached the Word with passion, conviction and holy fire ,in the manner of Elijah, the great prophet of old.
And today, with a heart filled with gratitude and tears, I say: a mighty general has returned home.

MY EARLIEST ENCOUNTER WITH A PRIEST OF FIRE
My earliest encounter with Fr. Ozele was as a little altar boy, when I witnessed his powerful and fire-brand homilies at Ughelli, Aragba and Sacred Heart Cathedral, Warri.

I was young, but I could feel something different whenever Fr. Ozele mounted the pulpit.
There was fire in his preaching.
There was depth.
There was conviction.
There was Scripture.
There was theology.
There was passion.
There was a movement of God that touched hearts and demanded transformation.
His homilies were not merely speeches. They were encounters.

At that time, his recorded cassettes and CDs were highly sought after. People wanted to hear him again and again because his preaching had a way of bringing the Word of God alive.
His voice carried a remarkable prophetic quality. At times, I thought of John the Baptist, the voice crying in the wilderness, and at other times of Elijah, standing fearlessly before his generation and declaring the Word of the Lord.
He gave preaching another meaning and another dynamic.

Yet, remarkably, he remained thoroughly and authentically Catholic—theologically sound, doctrinally balanced, intellectually rich and deeply rooted in the Church.
He was a proper Church man.
“WHICH MASS WILL FR. OZELE CELEBRATE?”
One memory from those early days remains unforgettable.

At the Cathedral, some parishioners would sometimes approach us altar boys and try to persuade us to tell them which Mass Fr. Ozele would celebrate the following Sunday.
They wanted to know because they wanted to attend his Mass.
That was the kind of spiritual attraction his ministry generated.
His Masses drew massive crowds. His meetings were filled. His programmes at Streams of Love attracted enormous numbers. His crusades and programmes through Catholic World Evangelical Outreach touched many lives.
People came because they wanted to hear the Word.
They came because they wanted to encounter God.
They came because something in the ministry of this humble priest awakened their faith.
A PRIEST OF THE EUCHARIST AND MARY
At the heart of Fr. Ozele’s ministry was not himself.
It was Christ.

His life and ministry were deeply Eucharistic and Marian.
He loved the Eucharist.
He loved the Blessed Virgin Mary.
He loved the Church.
He loved the Word of God.
And he understood that authentic Catholic charismatic spirituality cannot be separated from the Eucharist, the Sacraments, the Blessed Mother, Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the Church.
Personally, I have rarely witnessed a Catholic priest so sound, balanced and theologically grounded, while at the same time possessing such a powerful charismatic and evangelical expression.
He could teach deeply.
He could preach passionately.
He could engage the intellect.
He could touch the heart.
He could lead people into prayer.
He could proclaim Christ with fire.

That combination was one of the great gifts God gave him.
A MINISTRY ACCOMPANIED BY SIGNS AND WONDERS
Fr. Ozele’s influence extended far beyond the Diocese of Warri.
His ministry contributed significantly to the growth of Charismatic Renewal and spiritual revival, locally and beyond.

Through his preaching, teaching, prayer and healing ministry, many encountered Christ, returned to the faith, experienced spiritual renewal and discovered a deeper hunger for God.
His ministry was accompanied by testimonies of healing, transformation and conversion.
But the greatest miracle was never merely the physical healing.

The greatest miracle was the transformation of the human person.
His preaching brought people back to God.
His teaching deepened faith.
His prayer ministry strengthened the weak.
His healing ministry gave hope to the suffering.
His publications continued to nourish believers.
And the fruits of his ministry will continue long after his earthly voice has fallen silent.
As Scripture says:
“And these signs will accompany those who believe…”
— Mark 16:17
And again:
“The one who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and he will do greater works than these.”
— John 14:12

To God be the glory for the fruits that accompanied the ministry of His servant.
A PRIEST WITH A HEART FOR THE POOR
But Fr. Ozele was not only a preacher of the Word.
He was also a man of compassion.
He cared deeply for the poor, the sick, widows, orphans and the needy.
In the various places where he served, his concern for people in difficult circumstances was evident.
He championed charitable works.
He organised and encouraged assistance for widows.
He reached out to sick people.
He supported the needy.
He cared for orphans.
He understood that the Gospel must not remain on the lips; it must become love in action.

His life reminds us of the words of St. James:
“Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.”
— James 2:17
His faith worked through love.

A LEADER WHO LED BY EXAMPLE
As President of the Warri Association of Diocesan Priests, Fr. Ozele also demonstrated his gift of leadership.
He led with humility.
He encouraged the brethren.
He served.
He gave himself.
He led not merely by position, but by example.

As a young priest, I cherished those moments of deep spiritual sharing at our Upper Room—our “iron sharpens iron” meetings.
Those gatherings remain unforgettable.
Fr. Ozele and other elder brothers shared faith, ministry, priestly experiences, struggles, wisdom and life lessons.
Those encounters shaped and encouraged many of us younger priests.
“Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens the wits of another.”
— Proverbs 27:17

Today, I look back with profound gratitude for those moments.
THE CROSS: WHEN THE GENERAL WAS CALLED TO A DIFFERENT BATTLEFIELD
Then came the dreaded monster—gastric cancer.
Sickness reared its ugly head.
The mighty preacher now had to preach another sermon—not primarily with his voice, but with his suffering.
The battlefield changed.
The pulpit became a hospital bed.
The microphone became silence.
The crusade became chemotherapy.
The preaching became witness.
And yet, the fire did not go out.
Fr. Ozele remained a general in the Lord’s army—in sickness as he had been in health.
He carried his burden with a rare gift of faith and trust in God.
Like St. Paul, he demonstrated that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ:

“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
— Romans 8:38–39

Sickness could not extinguish his passion.
Suffering could not silence his love for God.
Even when his body was weakened, his spirit continued to reach out.
He continued to encourage believers.
He continued to teach.
He continued to publish and distribute materials freely to nourish God’s people.
He preached in season and out of season:
“Proclaim the message; be persistent whether convenient or inconvenient…”
— 2 Timothy 4:2
What a witness!

HE PREPARED WELL FOR DEATH
Looking back today, there is something deeply moving about the way Fr. Ozele lived after his experience of serious illness.
After many months of treatment and chemotherapy, he experienced what many regarded as a miraculous recovery.
And his response was extraordinary gratitude.
He did not take the experience for granted.
He opened his heart in thanksgiving to God and passionately appreciated those who stood by him.
His deep and passionate appreciation for our Bishop, Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Ewherido, the priests and lay faithful of the Diocese of Warri, and people of goodwill from far and near was remarkable.
He remembered those who prayed for him.
Those who visited.
Those who supported him financially.
Those who cared for him.
Those who stood beside him during his difficult journey.

I remember his detailed notes of appreciation, including his profound appreciation around his 60th birthday, and his invitation to all of us to join him in thanksgiving for his healing and recovery.
Reading those words today, one cannot but marvel.
He thanked God deeply.
He thanked people sincerely.
He gave glory to God passionately.
He seemed to be putting his house in order.
He prepared himself well.
And perhaps, in the mysterious providence of God, he was preparing us too.
“DEATH HAS BEEN SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY”
Today, therefore, though we mourn, we do not mourn as those without hope.
For the Christian story does not end in the grave.
The tomb is not the final destination.
Christ is risen.
And because Christ is risen, those who die in Him shall rise again.
So today we can stand before death and proclaim with St. Paul:
“Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
— 1 Corinthians 15:54–55

And again:
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:57
Fr. Ozele has fought his fight.
He has run his race.
He has kept the faith.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
— 2 Timothy 4:7

The soldier has laid down his earthly weapon.
The preacher has delivered his final earthly sermon.
The pilgrim has reached the threshold of eternity.
The mighty general has returned to the Commander of the heavenly army.

A LIFE POURED OUT FOR A GENERATION
Fr. Ozele, you emptied yourself for your generation.
God poured so much into you, and you poured so much of it back into His people.
You gave your voice.
You gave your intellect.
You gave your priesthood.
You gave your time.
You gave your strength.
You gave your compassion.
You gave your ministry.
You gave your suffering.
You gave your whole life.
And your impact was enormous.
Your voice may now be silent, but your message is still speaking.
Your hands may no longer be raised in prayer, but the lives you touched continue to pray.
Your books and publications remain.
Your teachings remain.
Your memories remain.
Your spiritual children remain.
Your priestly example remains.
Your fruits remain.
And Scripture tells us:
“Their works follow them.”
— Revelation 14:13

WE WILL MISS YOU
All lovers of God and His Word will miss you.
The Catholic Diocese of Warri will miss you.
The Catholic Church in Nigeria will miss you.
The Catholic world, at home and abroad, will miss you.
The Charismatic Renewal movement will miss you.
Your brother priests across the world will miss you.
Your parishioners will miss you.
Your friends and spiritual sons and daughters will miss you.
Your biological family will miss you.
We will miss your voice.
We will miss your preaching.
We will miss your laughter.
We will miss your wisdom.
We will miss your simplicity.
We will miss the fire.
We will miss the man behind the microphone.
We will miss the priest who could make Scripture come alive.
We will miss the mighty general.

BUT GOD LOVES YOU MORE
We loved you.
We prayed for you.
We wished you could remain with us.
We asked God to restore you to us.
But today, we surrender again to the wisdom and sovereignty of God.
God loves you more.
The God whom you preached.
The Christ whom you proclaimed.
The Eucharistic Lord whom you adored.
The Blessed Virgin Mary whom you loved.
The Church whom you served.
The Gospel for which you spent yourself.

Today we entrust you back into Their loving hands.
May the Good Shepherd, whom you loved and served so faithfully, receive you into His eternal dwelling.
May the Lord grant you a merciful judgment.
May He forgive your sins and purify every imperfection.
May the angels lead you into paradise.
May the martyrs receive you at your coming.
May you have a place of light, peace and refreshment in the presence of God.
And may the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom you loved so dearly, accompany you to the throne of her Son.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

FAREWELL, FR. OZELE
Rest well, dear Father.
Rest well, Mighty General of the Lord’s Army.
Rest well, Priest of Fire.
Rest well, Preacher of the Word.
Rest well, Teacher of the Faith.
Rest well, Servant of the Eucharist.
Rest well, Son of Mary.
Rest well, Shepherd of souls.
You fought the good fight.
You finished the race.
You kept the faith.

Until we meet again on the resurrection morning.
“Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
