Edo Assembly Probes Finances Of House Under Impeached Speaker, Okiye

The Edo State House of Assembly, has resolved to investigate the finances of the House under its ousted speaker, Rt. Hon. Frank Abumere Okiye who was impeached barely two weeks after the governorship election that saw Governor Godwin Obaseki returning to power for second term of office.

BIGPEN reports that the new Speaker of the House, Marcus Onobun, representing Esan West State Constituency, who was swore in immediately Okiye was kicked out, has constituted a three-man committee to look into financial records of the house under the leadership of the former speaker.

The House, in a unanimous decision also suspended the former speaker for three months to allow a seamless transition.

Recalls Okiye, who represents Esan North East state constituency in the House, was impeached during Monday’s plenary presided over his deputy, Mr Roland Asoro.

He was impeached sequel to a motion moved by the Leader of the House, Mr. Henry Okhuarobo. The motion was seconded by the member representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency, Prince Yekini Idaiye.

Consequent upon this, the member representing Igueben Constituency, Mr. Ephraim Aluebhosele, moved a motion to nominate a new Speaker. The motion was seconded by the member representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, Mr Emmanuel Agbaje.

The Deputy Speaker, Mr Roland Asoro, who presided over the plenary after the impeachment put the motion to a voice vote and in a unanimous decision Mr. Marcus Onobun, was thereafter elected as Speaker.

Onobun, after thanking members of the House for his election, dissolved all the House standing committees and relieved all the appointees of their appointment. He, subsequently, announced the suspension and probe of the financial records of the assembly under Okiye.
