Barely few days after his defection from the All Progressive Congress to the People Democratic Party (PDP), the Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Frank Abumere Okiye, has been impeached.

This comes barely two weeks after the Edo state governorship election that saw Governor Godwin Obaseki returning to power for second term of office.

Okiye, representing Esan North-East II was among seven lawmakers of the state Assembly who recently sent a letter to the House to announced their defection from the opposition party to the ruling party, PDP.

BIGPEN understands that Okiye was reportedly impeached Monday after the House resumed plenary. The House had on October 6 received Okiye and six other to the PDP and adjourned to 12th of October 2020.

On resumption of plenary on Monday, October 12, Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Henry Okhurobo moved a motion for the impeachment of the Speaker following an impeachment letter that was signed by the nine out of the 10-members who were present at the brief sitting on Monday.

Reports say the House immediately swore in Marcus Onobun, representing Esan West State Constituency, as the new Speaker.

BIGPEN recalls Rt. Hon. Okiye had few days ago announced the receipt of letters from the six members including himself to decamp to the ruling party. He hinged his defection on the fact that they would like to identify with the developmental strides of Governor of the state Mr Godwin Obaseki to move the Edo state forward.

Recalls the speaker also attributed the sharp division and factions in the All Progressive Congress Party in the state as one of the reason they are crossing to the People Democrats Party to enable them perform their duties effectively as representative of their Constituencies.

Those who formally defected from the APC with Rt.Hon Frank Okiye, include; Hon. Asoro Osadebamwen Roland. Hon. Aluebhosele Ephraim, Hon. Ojiezele Osezua Sunday, Hon. Okhuarobor Henry. Hon. Okoduwa Emma and Hon. Marcus Onobun.
