Scoreboard Collapses In Keshi Stadium Asaba, As Delta Govt Explains Cause Of Incident

A newly installed scoreboard inside the main bowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State has collapsed.

The multi-million naira facility crashed Monday night, destroying part of the stadium.

No life was lost in the incident which left many in the area scampering for safety.

Responding to the incident, Delta State Government blamed the cause of the incident on the heavy wind predicted across the country by NiMet which blew the facility down Monday night, the State Commissioner for Information, Chief Patrick Ukah said.

Ukah who spoke about the incident after the State Executive Council meeting on Tuesday (05/02/2019), disclosed that the score board destroyed part of the stadium.

He however thanked God that no life was lost, explaining that the situation was receiving attention.

Ukah further explained that the damaged part of the complex will be fixed by the contractor as the project have not been handed over to the state government.

BigPen Online recalls that in August 2018, thousands of athletes and spectators narrowly escaped death following the collapse of a overhead water tank at the Stadium during the 21st African Senior Athletics Championships.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Government has ratified the contract for the rehabilitation of Direct Labour Agency (DLA) Road, Asaba.

The information commissioner also disclosed that as part of efforts to continue to open up the state through roads, the EXCO meeting approved the (phase 11) of the construction of Fear God Street (Bonsaac) and construction of Pat Kanayo Okonta Street/Amaechi Uzuegbu Street/Part of Nze Francis Street/Onwa Nwachinemelu Street in Asaba.

Besides, the EXCO, according to Ukah, has approved the rehabilitation of electricity scheme at Ode-Itsekiri (phase 1) in Warri South Local Government Area and the construction of (phase 11) of Model Secondary School, Ogulagha in Burutu Local Government Area.

Other projects approved by the council included the construction of (phase 11) of Okerenkoko Township Road in Warri South-West Local Government Area and construction of (phase 1) of internal roads in Otolokpo Community in Ika North East Local Government Area.

Ukah also approved is the payment of the retirement/death benefits of 115 staff of the Delta State University, Abraka.
