The multi-billion naira Warri Township Stadium which is billed to host the Presidential/Governorship campaign of the All Progressuve Congress, APC in Delta State is now dilapidated, BigPen Online can report.

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to flag off APC campaign in the state, using the facility as venue on Thursday 17th January 2019.

BigPen Online reports that the state ruling party, PDP had also used the stadium which was cleaned up by a local church in Warri to carry out its Warri South Council campaign last week.

According to sources from the state, ahead of the flag off of the APC campaign, immediate past governor of the state, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan inspected the facility, expressing sadness that his predecessor couldn’t continue with the maintenance of the stadium which was home for Warri Wolves Football Club.

Uduaghan who was greeted by a group of youths on arrival at the stadium who were apparently complaining to him about the condition of the facilities, however promised to revived the Warri Wolves Football Club and also ensure the renovation of the stadium if President Muhammadu Buhari is reelected for a second term in office.

The former governor added that the youths in the area will be engaged in local security to protect the facilities at the Stadium.

While noting that the Stadium will be hosting the President on Thursday, Dr. Uduaghan asked the people to mobilize in support of the President.

The stadium which was built from foundation by former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori and completed to finishing level by Uduaghan was abandoned to rot away after it failed to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2009.

The failure of government to raise the quality of the facilities to a level that would meet the requirements of hosting matches of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, was part of the reason the competition could not hold in the oil city.

The stadium started deteriorating after the botched hosting bid and failure of successive government to continue its maintenance to either host local or league matches.

BigPen Online learnt that the facility which was deserted and become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and reptiles started crumbling after Uduaghan left office as it became unused.

The studium facilities which was littered with filthy was left for looters who reportedly have field day every now and then ransacking and stealing all valuables items.

Critics say impact of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration has not been felt in the Warri Township Stadium since Dr. Uduaghan left office but the governor has also been commended for completing the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba which was abandoned by Ibori and Uduaghan administration.

The Asaba stadium which Okowa had concentrated on has hosted two international event since its completion last year.
