Delta Govt Releases N5bn To Councils To Offset Backlog Salaries Of Workers

Delta State Government has released the sum of N5 billion to offset backlog of salaries being owed workers in the 25 Local Government Councils of the state.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Friday approved the monies for immediate release after an emergency Joint Allocation Committee, JAAC meeting held in Asaba, the state capital.
State Chairman of the Association of Local Government ofNigeria, ALGON in the state, Sir Constantine Ikpokpo, confirmed the development to newsmen, saying that with the release all the local government councils would pay all the backlogs from 2015 till date.
Ikpokpo said the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa had promised in January this year to assist the local government councils pay up their salary backlogs, adding that the Governor is committed to the welfare of local government councils workers.

He said: “We are happy with the Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for coming to our aid. The local government council workers are happy. The payment of this backlog will boost workers moral.”
While thanking Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for keeping to his promise, he said they will ensure that the release is used for the purpose it was meant.
BigPen Online recalls that the last lump sum payment released to the councils to augment their payment to workers after the country went into recession in 2014 was in 2015 when Governor Okowa release the sum of N3.2 billion from the state’s share of the bailout fund for the payment of salaries to local government workers in the state.
