Delta Govt Shuts Down Five Unregistered Driving Schools

The Delta State Traffic Management Authority DESTMA has closed down five schools in Asaba as part of measures to curb proliferation of unauthorized driving schools in the State.

State Director General of DESTMA, Stephen Dieseruvwe who disclosed this on Saturday in a statement posted on his Facebook page, said the closure was due to the failure of the Driving Schools to meet up with the laid down standard and regulation.

Dieseruvwe said that the closure was in line with section 15 of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) Law, 2013 which empowers the agency to clamp down on any person or institution that teaches or trains a person in the act of driving a vehicle in the State without approval.

According to him, despite the deadline of March 2018 given to all driving schools to complete the registration exercise forty one out of the identified eighty four centres met the standard and completed registration.

“Accordingly, the closure of the Schools commenced in Asaba, the State capital on Friday, 24th August 2018 and the business premises of the five affected schools were sealed in the first phase of the exercise.

“The Team during the enforcement was headed by the Director of Technical Services, Engineer Patrick Atufe. In the coming days and weeks, the exercise shall spread to all towns and cities where defaulting Driving Schools still operate, he said.

The DESTMA boss further disclosed that at the end of the exercise, the agency shall publish the names, addresses and phone numbers of all registered Driving Schools in Delta State for the benefit of would be learner/novice drivers in the State.

“With this positive development, Deltans are advised to only patronise registered Driving Schools, in order to have value for money spent in the course of training in addition to reducing casualty on roads due to actions of inexperienced drivers on major roads”, he said.
