Security operatives in a joint operation raided a militant camp in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government of Rivers State in which six militants were shot dead after intense gun battle which lasted for hours.

This operation which followed the killing of three members of ONELGA local Vigilance known as Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC) occurred in the early hours of yesterday.

However, there were conflicting reports about the state of the dreaded ex-militant in the area, ‘General’ Don Waney as some reports suggested that he was shot dead and his corpse carried away during the operation around Ali-Ugo junction.

Another version of the report however suggest that the militant leader is alive and well, according to one of his (Don Waney’s) former militant lieutenant who also added that the militant leader had fallen into the river after he was shot.

When contacted on the alleged killing of Waney, the Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said the information was sketchy adding that a formal statement would be released.

Earlier, gunmen had invaded Okposi and Omoku Communities on Saturday night , killing three members of OSPAC and another individual.

Don Waney and his gang who had earlier been part of the State Government’s amnesty last year had made plans to destabilize the security structure created by the Caretaker of the community and it was further gathered that while they (the militants) were in the process of planning, the security operatives made up of the Police, Army, Department of State Security, DSS, Joint Military Task Force (JTF) and OSPAC stormed their camp.

Meanwhile, the Caretaker Committee Chairman ONELGA, Olisa has assured that the security of the LGA would not be compromised and there are plans to create a formidable security structure in the Local Government.

Don Waney is alleged to have been responsible for the killing of several Rivers indigenes, amongst them were, one Chief Adube and his three children, the beheading of Franklin Obi and the killing of his wife and son and the arson on the home of Hon Vincent Ogbuagu, as well as several others in and around Omoku in Ogba /Egbema/ Ndoni LGA of Rivers State.

As at the time of filing this reports, Don Waney’s status is unconfirmed.
