Congested Warri prison

Images showing Warri prison in oil rich Delta state as an eyesore has surface.

The Nigerian Prison Service, located in Okere in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State is seriously congested and in a deplorable state.

The Prison which currently houses more than a thousand five hundred inmates usually suffers lack of water supply as a result of poor electricity.

Consequently, the entire prison is often in darkness even as there is no generating set to power or pump water.

The toilet facilities are in a bad shape in addition to poor sanitary condition of the prisons.

Inadequate accommodation for the inmates is another source of worry as there are no enough office spaces for prison officials.

Prison officials cannot even attend to visitors while more than forty inmates are kept in a small cell(room) that ordinarily could not contain five people.

Warri Based lawyer, Mr. Robinson Ariyo, Esq, told DAILY POST that the prison is congested because the Nigerian Criminal Justice system is being operated in a stockish manner, stressing that most of the inmates are being held on “Holden Charges.”

Ariyo lamented that the Nigerian Constitution does not recognize “Holden Charge” just as he explained that people are legally arraigned on holding charges before magistrates’ courts without jurisdiction pending the advice of Department of Public Prosecution, DPP.

Ariyo noted that the entire Nigerian System is corrupt and needs an overhaul.
