American Society Of Safety Professionals Seek Synergy With NPA On Occupational Safety

The American Society of Safety Professionals, Nigeria Chapter, has called for synergy with the management of the Nigerian Port Authority toward enforcement of occupational safety and health regulations in the maritime industry.
President of the society, Mrs. Mercy Omoifo-Irefo made the call during a recent courtesy visit on the new Executive Director, Marine and Operations, Nigerian Ports Authority, Hon. Onari Brown at his office in Lagos.
She said that NPA should be in the fore front of promoting work place safety since their areas of operations are mainly in the waterways of the country.
Omoifo-Irefo expressed the commitment of the ASSP to partner NPA toward tackling critical issues facing optimal operational capacity in areas that border on maritime safety.
According to her, there are lot more to be done in tackling issues concerning promoting safety culture within the port environment, and those who do business with NPA.
She urged top management personnel of the federal parastatal to partner with ASSP to promote safety operations from its current level to a more safer workplace environment.
The ASSP President noted that in order to prevent avoidable accidents and other related workplace accidents, stakeholders must synergy in taking cognisance of the risk associated with their nature of job and the safety awareness among employees.
The President however, solicited for a continuous support and synergy between NPA and ASSP.
In his response, Hon. Brown thanked the ASSP’s President and visiting members of the association and pledged his continuous support for the association.
He, however, urged the Health Safety and Environmental Manager to come up with a programs schedule in collaboration with American Society of Safety Professionals that will enhance safety awareness and consciousness amongst members of the parastatal within and outside the job.
The Executives Director, Mr Umar Abubakar Garba, General Manager, Tariff & Billing, HSE Manager and other top management functionaries present, appreciated the ASSP leadership for the visit and look forward to having a good working relationship with the association.
Earlier, the ASSP’s President had acknowledged Mr Umar Abubakar Garba, who is a member of the association for his creative leadership and high sense of commitment to occupational health and safety issues.
