Egbema/Gbararmatu Communities Development Foundation (EGCDF), an interventionist agency being sponsored by Chevron Nigeria Limited, has called on the Federal Government to immediately put machinery in place for the take-off of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, following the announcement of the N2billion grant.

The group which commended the Federal Government for the commitment showed so far, said the immediate implementation of the approval would further sustained the relative peace and development of the Niger Delta region, especially the coastal areas that bears the brunt of the oil and gas production.

Chairman of the body, Comrade Jude Ukori, who stated this in a statement on Friday in Warri, Delta state, urged the federal government to take a step further to fast track the entire process of the take off of the institution so that it could meet up with the new academic session.

“We the people of Egbema and Gbararmatu in Warri South West and Warri North Local Government Area of the state are indeed very grateful to the federal government for taking the initiative to commence the process’s of the taking off of the Maritime University in Okerenkoko.

“This would no doubt go a long away in boosting the socio-economic lives of people not only in the area but the entire region”.

“We wish to plead that this process does not end with mere pronouncements but backed with action geared towards accelerating the take off of the institution to meet up with the growing demands in the maritime industry in terms  of supplies of both middle class and professionals that would be well trained in all fields.

”It is equally the hope of the foundation that this renewed commitment by government would ensure that the institution meets up with the new calendar year of academics by seeing to it that all necessary requirements that would promote excellent learning environment to make the institution attain international standards in Maritime training are put in place”, he said.

Comrade Ukori, also used the opportunity to appeal to the Delta state government to ensure that the 13 percent derivative accrued to the oil bearing communities in the state gets to them as at when due to enable the appropriate community development agencies realize their set out mandate of implementing some community based projects that would impact directly on the lives of the people.

He noted that a lot of identified community based projects are begging for attention and because the various interventionist agencies could not access funds it becomes very difficult to embark on these projects.
