‘We’re Cooperating With Buhari For National Interest’ – Senate President

Senator Ahmad Lawan, president of the Senate, on Sunday says the National Assembly would continue to support policies, programmes and every action plans of President Muhammadu Buhari for the seek of national interest.

He spoke at the Mother of Redeemer Catholic Church, Effurun, near Warri, Delta state during the thanksgiving mass and grand reception of deputy president of the senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

Lawan said that agreeing with executive arm of government doesn’t mean the national assembly would abandon its oversight function and constitutional role of enforcing checks and balances on the executive arm of government.

He said that every disagreement with the executive arm of government would be settled for national interest, because “we are doing this for this country to move forward”.

According to him, there is no law that says that the National Assembly must fight the executive for democracy to be established.

“So for us in the senate we have since decided to work hand‑in-hand, harmoniously, and with a very cooperative manner with the Executive Arm of Government. Why do we have to do that? It is a necessity, it is a must!.

“The law didn’t say that the National Assembly should be fighting themselves for democracy to be established. It is assumed that there must be disagreement between the two arms of government. Sometimes perceptive may differ. They may see it white; the national assembly will see it green or black.

“At the end of the day, it is assumed that the differences will be settled in national interest. That’s what we are determine to do. We will continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari in goodwill, harmoniously for national interest.

He said that the senate was concern about the security situation of the country, saying that plans are on the way to improve the security.

“The security situation of this country is too important for Mr. President to handle alone. The federal government is determine to have strong policies and action plans to tackle the security architecture of this country and the national assembly will support Mr. President in all of these plans because we believe that’s the way to go.

“Our work is to make Nigeria better and we are elected to do this work. So I want to assure our people that we are concern about the security situation”, he said.
