Why I Withdrew from Delta South Race — Ikpokpo, Ex-ALGON Chief

Former Deputy National President of All Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Sir Malik Itiako Ikpokpo, has announced his withdrawal from the Delta South Senatorial District race under the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the influence of entrenched party politics and the need for a fair, level playing field.
Ikpokpo, a chieftain of the APC and former chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area, made his decision known on Friday evening after comprehensive consultations with party leaders, stakeholders, and members.
His withdrawal comes just days after he obtained the necessary expression of interest and nomination forms, and was cleared to contest in the APC primary.
In a statement, Ikpokpo explained that he entered the race with a vision of inclusive leadership through his C.L.U.E. Agenda—aimed at effective communication, legislative action, unity, and empowerment for the people of Delta South.
His campaign resonated with many constituents and party members who saw it as a chance for purposeful representation.
However, he expressed disappointment over the internal party dynamics that hindered a transparent and fair primary process.
“What was supposed to be a democratic contest turned into a political battleground influenced by entrenched interests and power plays,” he stated.
“After extensive consultations with respected leaders and stakeholders, I have decided to step aside.”, he declared.
Ikpokpo, a one-time Director General of ALGON, maintained that his withdrawal was motivated by his commitment to democracy and the integrity of the party.
He thanked supporters, party leaders, and the “Delta South Rebirth Movement” for their unwavering backing and urged party faithfuls to remain hopeful and committed to democratic opportunities.
He also called for increased support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori ahead of the 2027 general elections, reaffirming his belief in the party’s future.
While stepping down from the race, Ikpokpo expressed optimism about APC’s prospects and emphasized his continued dedication to the development of Delta South and Nigeria at large.
