CEO Urges Women to Turn Gender Inequality in Energy Sector into Economic Growth

The CEO of Starz Investment Company Limited, Iroghama Ogbeifun, has called on women in the energy industry to view gender inequality not as a barrier but as a catalyst for economic empowerment.

Speaking at the Women Powering Women in Energy 2.0 webinar organized by Women in Energy, Oil and Gas (WEOG), Ogbeifun emphasized that closing the gender gap presents a lucrative opportunity for economic growth and sector innovation.

Under the theme “Fueling Ambition: How Women Can Start, Scale and Sustain Businesses in the Energy Sector,” the webinar aimed to inspire women to leverage emerging opportunities, develop industry-specific skills, and create sustainable businesses that contribute to Nigeria’s economic diversification.

While statistics reveal that women currently occupy just 18% of Nigeria’s energy workforce and less than 25% of leadership roles, Ogbeifun pointed out that this underrepresentation also signifies an untapped economic potential.

“Instead of viewing gender inequality as a problem, we should see it as a vast opportunity for growth, innovation, and diversification,” she stated.

Ogbeifun urged women to focus on building competence, credibility, and strategic relationships—key elements for success—and to recognize that economic progress in the sector depends on their active participation.

“Credibility is your most valuable currency; people invest in you before they invest in your ideas,” she emphasized.

The session also highlighted the importance of continuous learning, strategic networking, and niche development as strategies for women to position themselves as leaders and innovators within the energy space.

Participants were encouraged to see their involvement not just as a matter of gender equality, but as a pathway to economic resilience and national development.

Dr. Sarah Nwinee, Director of Women in Energy, Oil and Gas, Delta Chapter, and Mrs. Tolu Longe, WEOG’s National President, both stressed that progress is being made but more deliberate efforts are needed to unlock the full economic potential of women in energy.

As the sector evolves, Ogbeifun stated that women who harness these opportunities will not only shape their careers but also contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth and energy sustainability.

The webinar was moderated by the founder of RejeeLively Consult, Rejoice Debekeme.
