New Delta CP Resumes Duty, Pledges People-centred Approach to Policing
The newly posted Commissioner of Police, Delta State Police Command, CP Aina Adesola has resumed duty as the 23rd Police commissioner succeeding Olufemi Abaniwonda, who was recently promoted and posted as Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
CP Adesola resumed duty on Monday at the command’s headquarters in Asaba, pledging to consolidate on existing gains while adopting a professional, intelligence-driven, and people-centred approach to policing.
The new police chief, who was deputy commissioner of police (Operations), at the command between 2023 and 2025, on assumption of duty observed a guard of honour and parade after which he addressed officers and men of the command.
In his inaugural address as 23rd commissioner of police in the command, CP Adesola, promised that his focus will include intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, community-based policing, and strict adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights.
He pledged to build on existing security frameworks and strengthen proactive policing strategies across Delta State, calling on residents to continue to support the Police and other security agencies,even as he urged youths to resist all forms of criminal inducement.

He promised to work closely with the Delta State Government, traditional institutions, community leaders, and other stakeholders to address criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, community conflicts, and other forms of criminality, within the confines of the law and in line with national policing standards.
CP Adesola who started his policing career in Delta state after passing out of the Police Academy. said, “returning to serve as Commissioner of Police is therefore both a professional responsibility and a personal commitment to the peace and security of this State.
He reiterated the mandate given to him by the Inspector-General of Police to include; to strengthen security, reduce crime to the barest minimum, and ensure that the people of Delta State live in safety and peace.
“Delta State remains one of the economic hubs of our nation, and it is well established that no society or economy can thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity. It is therefore our responsibility to protect lives, property, and legitimate economic activities across the State”, he assured.
He thanked the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for the confidence reposed on him, and also appreciated his predecessor, AIG Olufemi Abaniwonda, for his leadership, dedication, and service to the command. He said that Abaniwonda left behind institutional structures and operational foundations upon which he shall continue to build.
CP Adesola charged officers and men of the command to uphold discipline, professionalism, loyalty to duty, and respect for the uniform at all times. He cautioned them against acts of incivility, abuse of office, extortion, or violation of human rights, saying none of those vices would be tolerated under his leadership.
While soliciting the cooperation of journalists in the state, he said that the media remains a critical partner as “your professionalism, objectivity, and cooperation play a vital role in shaping public understanding, building trust, and supporting security initiatives”.
State Police Public Relation Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in a statement on Monday, said that the outgoing Commissioner of Police, AIG Olufemi Abaniwonda, in his handing-over remarks, expressed sincere appreciation to the Delta State Government and the people of the State for their cooperation and support during his tenure. He urged them to extend the same goodwill to his successor.
Addressing members of the press, CP Adesola assured Deltans and residents that under his leadership, the Delta State Police Command would remain firm, professional, and proactive in ensuring that the State becomes increasingly hostile to criminal elements and activities.
CP Aina Adesola was born on 2nd September 1968 to the family of Mr and Mrs Aina Ajana and hails from Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Ondo State Univerisity in the year 1990 and was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a member of course 4 Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) on 10th June 1994.
He attended the elite Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State. Upon completion of his training, he was deployed to Delta state in the year 1996, where he served in Ogwashi-Uku.
The new Commissioner of Police has served the Nigeria Police Force in various capacities, including operational, administrative, investigative, and training roles.
In furtherance of his professional development, CP Aina Adesola has attended several leadership and specialised courses, including the Citizenship and Leadership Course, Sherri Hills, Jos; Leadership Command Course; Tactical Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos; Police Mobile Training Course, Gwoza; Community Policing Train-the-Trainers Course, Police College, Ikeja; as well as International Law Enforcement Agency (ILEA) programmes in Gaborone, Botswana, and Roswell, New Mexico, United States of America.
Widely regarded as a disciplined, detribalised, and people-oriented police officer, CP Aina Adesola has participated in numerous workshops and seminars both within and outside the country. He is known for his professionalism, humility, and commitment to community-based policing. His hobbies include reading, travelling, and playing football. He is happily married and blessed with children.
