The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 44 suspected internet fraudsters in Ebonyi and Anambra states.
The suspects were taken into custody on September 28 and 29, 2024, after intelligence linked them to online crimes.
The suspects allegedly used social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to scam unsuspecting victims. Some posed as romantic partners to foreign nationals, while others had fraudulent documents on their devices.
“Upon arrest, preliminary investigations showed that the suspects took advantage of social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to defraud unsuspecting victims. Specifically, while some of the suspects specialized in using fake identities to engage foreign nationals in romantic affairs with intention to defraud them, others were found with fraudulent documents in their devices.
Other items recovered from them include laptops and different brands of sophisticated mobile phones”, EFCC said in a statement.
The EFCC will charge the suspects to court once investigations are complete.
