By Joelson Eboh
A fence of a building housing Greater Academy in Orhuwhorun, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, has collapsed, killing a 6-year-old KG-3 pupil of the school.
The tragedy incident occured on Tuesday, February 8, at the school located near the popular Usieffurun junction.
The incident took place at the close of school when the pupil whose identified was not immediately known was waiting by the fence for her younger brother who is on another class so they can go home.
The deceased, a third child in a family of four, had stopped by the fence to wait when the block used to demarcate her class from the other suddenly fell on her.
It was gathered that she was about picking up her lunch bag when the block collapsed on her.
The development which triggered pandemonium in the area, could have led to the burning down of the school if not for the quick intervention of some residents.
Sensing danger, the proprietress had fled the scene to the police station to report the incident as mob surged the school to burn it down.
Witness said that she was however detained at the station after her statement was taken.
Some residents said that the incident would have been prevented if the school management had used a wooden type of demarcation rather than block.
Reacting to the incident, the father of the deceased said; “I don’t want any police case in this unfortunate incident, it is a painful time for my family, as nothing can bring back my daughter. I have buried my daughter and I want the proprietor released and as I don’t want to pursue this.”
State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Bright Edafe could not be reached as of press time but police source disclosed that the proprietor has been released, as further investigation is ongoing.
