Twitter Must Give Assurance Of Responsible Communication – FG

The Minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has said that a microblogging site like Twitter that has the power to manage and facilitate the communication of billions of people around the world, must give assurance of responsible communication in its platform in the country.

BIGPENNGR reports that Onyeama stated this at a meeting with the envoys of the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), the European Union (EU), the Canadian Government and the Government of Ireland over their response to its ban on Twitter’s operations in the country.

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing; why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” he said.

“The basic condition is really responsible communication. We know the power of words. And power of words for good and power of words for bad. When you have that kind of power to manage and facilitate the communication of billions of people around the world, it has to come with responsibilities, absolutely; it has to come with responsibilities. And so, the conditions will be responsible use of media,” Onyeama said.
