Soldier, Police Reportedly Shot Dead As Gunmen Attack Military Post In Delta

Tension is currently brewing in Sapele, Delta State as armed men suspected to be militants killed a policeman and a soldier attached to the 19 Battalion, Koko, Warri North local government area of Delta State.

BIGPENNGR.COM understands that the army personnel was gun down in a military post at Oton community Sapele.

The military post is located at the bank of Oton river.

Though it was not clear whether those who attacked the military formation were “militants or hoodlums”, a military source said the attackers came with a speed boat through the Oton river, suggesting they were ‘militants‘.

The attackers were said to have opened fire at the army officers who were at a checkpoint at the entrance of the community, close to the river.

Unverified account says, a police man was also amongst those allegedly shot dead.

Although the 19 Battalion, Nigerian Army in Koko were yet to make any response to the attack, a military source confirmed the story, saying “Yes there was an attack, one army has been confirmed dead, but the situation is still not very clear.”

Meanwhile, there have been heavy deployment of troops to the community, Sunday night, local sources from the area said, adding that the development is already causing tension among residents for fear of possible military onslaught.

Attacks on solders manning riverine waterways have been frequent in recent time in the state.
