Police Recovers Bodies of Six Officers From Bayelsa Boat Mishap

The Bayelsa State Police Command has recovered bodies of six officers who were reported to have drown after a boat mishap during the weekend by-election in the state.

BIGPENNGR.COM had reported that the policemen drowned after the boat conveying them capsized on election duties at Oporoma in Bayelsa State.

The victims were heading to Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government of the state when their boat capsized eve of the Saturday senatorial bye-elections in Bayelsa Central and West.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Asinim Butswat, however on Sunday said that the Command regrets to announce the recovery of the bodies of policemen who went missing after a boat mishap.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday 4th December, 2020 when one of the speedboats conveying eleven Policemen from Yenagoa to Southern Ijaw capsized at Oporoma.

Five of the Policemen were rescued immediately, while six were missing.

A combined team of rescue officers from the Marine Department of the Bayelsa State Police Command and local divers have recovered the six bodies of the missing policemen and they are deposited at the mortuary.

The Command however, condoled with the families of the deceased. Investigation has commenced to ascertain the cause of the boat mishap, the statement added.
